LIES WE BURY by Elle Marr - Review & Giveaway

"Secrets never stay buried for long."

Marissa Mo has spent the past twenty years trying to outrun and overcome the demons of her upbringing. The twenty-seven year old, who now calls herself Claire Lou spent the first seven years of her life captive in an underground basement prison. She escaped with her mother and two sisters from sicko Chet Granger, who is now set to be paroled.

LIES WE BURY (Thomas&Mercer) by Elle Marr is a creepy mix of the novel, ROOM layered with secrets and lies. It's a dual narrative that takes readers back and forth between captivity and present day. Claire takes a freelance crime photographer job at the Portland Post and finds herself with personal connections to a series of murders. Rather than go to the police, she decides she must solve them herself.

Based on her early years, I could appreciate Claire's struggle to take one day at a time, but she continually made bad impulsive decisions. She never could fully trust anyone trying to help her and thought the worst of every person she came in contact with. LIES WE BURY was terrifying, thrilling and I read it in one sitting. The characters are complex and multi-dimensional. I found myself kind of liking everyone, including a few I shouldn't have. I was pleasantly surprised by the ending. I never saw it coming.

Marr recently signed a new two book deal with Thomas&Mercer. I look forward to reading what's next.

Originally from Sacramento, Elle Marr graduated from UC San Diego before moving to France, where she earned a master's degree from the Sorbonne University in Paris. She now lives and writes in Oregon, with her husband, son, and one very demanding feline.
