THE NIGHT of MANY ENDINGS by Melissa Payne - Review & Giveaway

Bestselling Author, Melissa Payne's new novel, THE NIGHT OF MANY ENDINGS (LakeUnion) is an emotionally rich, feel-good novel about hope, second chances and seeing the world through someone else's eyes. It tackles some deep issues such as guilt, loneliness, homelessness, depression and addiction. That's a lot to take on, but the story is beautifully written and the ending feels optimistic.

Imagine a blizzard is moving in, you can't leave the place you are, in this case a library and you're stuck with strangers. It's a great premise for a novel and it's THE NIGHT OF MANY ENDINGS. There are five characters: librarian, Nora. troubled teen, Jasmine, widowed, Marlene, homeless Lewis and security guard, Vlado.

Nora's parents were killed in a freak accident when she was little and her brother, Mario blames himself. Mario has disappeared into a world of drugs and addiction and Nora has been searching for him. Unable to find her brother, Nora has developed a fix the world complex. On the night of the blizzard the characters are all on the defense, but eventually they share and each one changes in many ways.

The characters are complex and well developed. My favorite? Nora, the bleeding heart. She can't help her brother, so she tries to fix everyone she comes across.

For as long as she can remember, Melissa Payne has been telling stories in one form or another—from high school newspaper articles to a graduate thesis to blogging about marriage and motherhood. But she first learned the real importance of storytelling when she worked for a residential and day treatment center for abused and neglected children. There she wrote speeches and letters to raise funds for the children. The truth in those stories was piercing and painful and written to invoke in the reader a call to action: to give, to help, to make a difference. Melissa’s love of writing and sharing stories in all forms has endured.

She lives in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains with her husband and three children, a friendly mutt, a very loud cat, and the occasional bear. The Secrets of Lost Stones is her first novel.

  1. Hi, I have never been stuck in a blizzard, thank goodness. Only place I have been stuck in is at home when we had the freeze the beginning of this year, our house is all electric so my husband our pup and I stayed mostly in our bedroom with an oil lamp, lots of blankets, burning candles and a tiny little Coleman stove. Everything was frozen outside, we were like that for a couple of days until finally we got our electricity back. My husband would make coffee on the tiny little stove and we would heat up canned goods on the little stove. That is when we learn a hard lesson, of all the little things we take for granted. aliciabhaney(at)sbcglobal(dot)net

  2. I was stuck in my dorm in the Blizzard of '78 in Boston. We had no power, no food deliveries and travel was banned, so my roommate and I decided to walk to my family home 32 miles away after the snow stopped. Quite an adventure but not very smart!

  3. Years ago my husband and I went to Michigan for a weekend. On the way home to Chicago we heard that Chicago was snowed in after receiving 21 inches of snow. When we got close to the northwest suburbs all the exits from the highway were snowed in and we had to find an exit that had been plowed. We got home to waist deep snow in our driveway.

  5. Living in Massachusetts, I've been stuck in many blizzards, but one time does stand out. It snowed for a few days straight and myself and my son and boyfriend were basically stuck home for a couple days. We couldn't even open our doors because the snow was so high and no one came to plow or shovel. Fun times! Thanks for the chance!
