LOVE BETRAYAL MURDER by Adam Mitzner - Review & Interview
LOVE BETRAYAL MURDER (BlackstonePublishing) is one of the most exciting legal thrillers I've read in a long time. Author, Adam Mitzner continues to work as a full-time lawyer at a Manhattan law-firm, while writing his books and that gives him an edge at being topical and accurate. LOVE BETRAYAL MURDER has so many different complex plots, I never saw the ending coming.
Mathew Brooks and Vanessa Lyons both work at a powerful prestigious law firm in Manhattan. Both are in love with their jobs and each other, except Vanessa is also married. Matthew soon becomes partner and they are now violating the firms policy of a partner supervising a subordinate. They may think they're keeping a big secret, but office gossip outs them. Vanessa is denied partnership and believes its because of the affair and Matthew not backing her. When Matthew is fired, all hell breaks loose.
Vanessa is savagely knifed to death on a crowded New York City corner. No one sees anything. The cameras aren't conclusive. With all the betrayal between the players, anyone could be the murderer. Will the killer be found? Is justice possible?
We got the opportunity to ask Adam a few questions:
1. Why do readers love thrillers?
It’s all there in the question -- to be thrilled. But more specifically, to be transported to a world of danger, where the things that we think we believe in -- love, truth, family -- are put to the test.
2. What makes your books stand out from other authors in your genre?
The characters. Everyone in my books is flawed to some degree. I think that leads to a more complex story and a harder to figure out final twist. Another thing is that, as a practicing lawyer, you can be sure that the legal parts are 100% accurate. None of that Law & Order stuff where something that would never in a million years happen in an actual courtroom is the lynch pin to the case.
Readers are quick to point out when they see mistakes in my book (my favorite being when I referred to the USS Intrepid as a battleship and a reader who served on her emailed me that she is an aircraft carrier), but I’m proud to say that no one has ever pointed to an error regarding the law -- and a lot of lawyers read my books.
3. What makes the legal community, particularly attorneys, such fodder for compelling stories and characters?
Who doesn't love to sit in judgement, at least sometimes? A courtroom is the only circumstance that regular people are actually empowered to judge another’s conduct. And is there anything more terrifying than to be judged in that way? The most compelling thing to me about it, though -- in fiction and in real life -- is the lengths people will go, and not go, to save themselves or to see justice (or at least what they think is justice) done.
4. How are you able to practice your profession as an attorney and write bestselling novels?
My love for writing makes it easy. Although maybe it’s my desire to do something beside practicing law that makes it easy. A perfect weekend for me is to write on Saturday and Sunday from the moment I wake up until two. A perfect workday is to edit what I’d written the prior weekend from the moment I wake up until ten, and then log onto my work computer, at least three days of the week. If I stick to that regimen, all my lawyering deadlines get met and I can publish a book a year.
5. Is there anything you'd like to add?
One of my favorite things about being an author is hearing from readers. I put my email in the acknowledgements of my books and encourage readers to share their thoughts with me.
I always write back. Always. Let me prove it to you -- email me at
